‘CHANGING PLACES’
The Halprin Landscape Conservancy and PLACE present Changing Places, an evening of music, dance, art and community, in the four fountain plazas of the Portland Open Space Sequence: Keller Fountain, Pettygrove Park, Lovejoy Fountain and the Source Fountain.
Scheduled for Wednesday, September 13, 2017, from 5:00 to 9:00 PM, the interactive celebration is free and open to the public. The parks are located between SW Lincoln and SW Market Streets, and along the pedestrian trail between SW Second and Third Avenues.
In the heart of Portland’s newly branded “Fountain District,” the evening will feature choreographed dances, music by pianists/composers Jennifer Wright and Daniel Brugh, as well as performances by Portland SummerFest in a constantly evolving backdrop of colorful lights and sculptural enhancements of the landscape. The audience will be invited to jump in to create messages and drawings to share as part of the activities.
Organized by the landscape and urban design firm PLACE and sponsored by Spirit Mountain Community Fund, PLACE, Halprin Landscape Conservancy, Portland SummerFest, and Portland Parks & Recreation, Changing Places will celebrate the creative spirit behind the fountain plazas’ design and the recent joining of area property owners, businesses, and key stakeholders in the naming of the wider neighborhood as the Fountain District.
Activities and performances will be staged at each fountain, many with interactive components for attendees, including:
The Source Fountain—“Origin”: An urban soundscape of recordings of Lawrence and Anna Halprin sets the stage for a stroll through the illuminated walkways towards the Lovejoy Fountain.
Lovejoy Fountain—“RSVP Cycles”: Against the backdrop of the waterfalls dancing in colorful spotlights, musicians will bring the plaza to life in sound. Pianists Jennifer Wright* and Daniel Brugh** will perform a musical vigil for peace. Luminarias adorned with personal messages of inspiration, hope and encouragement will decorate the plaza; attendees will be invited to create their own as part of the display.
Pettygrove Park—“Circle the Earth”: Pettygrove Park will be transformed into an enchanted forest, with reflective material used to wrap the park’s trees.
Keller Fountain—“We Are All in This Together”: Grand fountain walls and cascading water will be illuminated with a spectrum of colorful lights emerging from the foggy basin. Throughout the evening, artists will perform in collaboration with the Portland SummerFest Opera in the Park, including Amy Hansen, soprano; Sarah Maines, mezzo-soprano; Robb Harrison, bass-baritone; and Chuck Dillard, pianist.
Promenade Walkways—“Parades and Changes”: Traverse City Dance scores revealing timeless beauty of freedom, creativity and cooperation. Colorful graphics on the paths will invite those strolling to join in the dance and add words, drawings, and patterns to the walkway designs.
