Light Installation & Festival

September 13, 2017 @ 5:00 pm - 9:00 pm

The Keller Fountain glows in the dark. A pianist plays nightly from 6-9 PM.

The Changing Places Light Installation & Festival will celebrate the art, music and design of landscape architect Lawrence Halprin and his wife, Anna, a noted dancer and choreographer. Events will take place throughout the Sequence, guiding visitors from one park to another.

The Source Fountain – “Origin”
Enjoy an urban soundscape, inspiring all to reach into oneself. A recording of Halprin and his wife, Anna, will echo from a small speaker hidden in the nearby landscape. Vinyl graphics of  dancing scores will adorn the Fountain with the occasional release of sky lanterns.

Lovejoy Fountain – “RSVP Cycles”
Using the fountain as the stage, dancers will activate the plaza and  fountain. Visitors will adorn luminarias  with personal messages of inspiration, hope and encouragement. Come write your own!

Pettygrove Park – “Circle the Earth”
Pettygrove Park’s trees will be transformed into dancers combining white fabric and powered black light. Pianists Jennifer Wright and Daniel Brugh will perform a musical vigil for peace featuring Wright’s three-hour piano duet, I Sing an Unending Song of Radical Beauty. For this event, Wright transformed a photograph of Martin Luther King, Jr., into a musical score wherein each pixel comes alive as a musical sound.

Ira Keller Fountain – “We Are All in This Together”
Grand fountain walls and cascading water will be illuminated with evocative spectrum of colorful lights emerging from the foggy basin. Throughout the evening, the site will be activated by performing artists in collaboration with the Summer Opera in the Park.

Promenade Walkways – “Parades and Changes”
Vinyl super-graphics on the pavement act as a choreographed wayfinding device to direct participants through the Sequence installation while decal graphics on the pavement will express topography and dance themes. The scale of scores will grow throughout the night as participants add words, illustrations and patterns. Dancing encouraged!
